Community-based organizations across the Estuary work every day to address shared concerns such as poor water quality, public access, flooding, extreme heat, habitat loss, and emerging contaminants like microplastics. Through advocacy, stewardship, and community engagement, they help shape solutions that strengthen the health of the Estuary while improving the quality of life for waterfront communities. At the same time, many of these same groups face capacity challenges around funding, staff, technology, and leadership, all of which can limit their growth and ability to deliver on their mission over time.
What we’re doing: To help address these needs, the NY-NJ Harbor & Estuary Program (HEP) is launching a new training series, From Capacity to Impact: Skill Building Trainings to Collectively Strengthen our Estuary. The series is designed to share practical tools and resources with partners that can help strengthen their organizational capacity and maximize the impact of our shared efforts.

Session 1: Organizing Your Organization’s Governing Body and Leadership to Get Things Done
August 18, 2026 (10am – 12pm)
Understanding the different duties, roles and functions of governing boards and committees can help organizations maximize their impact and get things done. This first session will kick off our From Capacity to Impact: Skill Building Trainings To Collectively Strengthen Our Estuary series. Attendees will also learn about new and innovative strategies and models for increasing the engagement of board and other governing groups and members.
Session 2: Navigating the Life Cycle of Organizations and Their Governing Groups and Leadership
September 17, 2026 (10am – 12pm)
This second session, part of our From Capacity to Impact: Skill Building Trainings To Collectively Strengthen Our Estuary series, will explore what the typical life cycle of an organization looks like including their governing groups, leadership, and boards. What are the different stages an organization faces as it grows and develops? What are some of the ways to organize and manage in order to address change? What are the advantages and disadvantages of strategies such as the merging of organizations?
Session 3: Vision to Action: Strategic Planning for the Estuary We Envision
October 22, 2026 (10am – 12pm)
In this session, participants will learn about the ins and outs of a strategic plan – a roadmap that defines an organization’s mission, long-term direction, priorities, and goals. Most importantly, attendees will explore when is the right time and opportunity for their organization to undertake this process and where and how to start.
